Ely is a cathedral city situated in Cambridgeshire, East Anglia. Despite its city status it has a very modest population of approximately 14,000. It is often referred to as the Isle of Ely because until the Fens were drained in the seventeenth century, it was in fact an island surrounded by marshes.
